The hepatology service delivers treatment and management of viral hepatitis and is part of the south east London hepatitis C Operational Delivery Network (ODN). Lambeth and Southwark, our local London boroughs, have some of the highest rates of chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection England; there are >1000 patients with chronic hepatitis B under the care of GSTT. Since November 2022, the emergency department at St Thomas Hospital has provided opt-out testing for hepatitis B and C, in addition to HIV. The challenge now lies in linkage to care, ensuring patients diagnosed have access to treatment and monitoring. This clinical fellowship aims to support the viral hepatitis service at GSTT and will contribute to work across the network to improve care for patients living with viral hepatitiss. There will be a strong focus on management and leadership, with opportunity to be involved at a regional level with research and quality improvement projects.
The post would suit an individual with specialty experience in gastroenterology/hepatology, ST3+ or equivalent. Although sub-specialty clinical experience and knowledge in viral hepatitis is desirable, teaching and training will be provided in this area. There is no formal provision for endoscopy training in this post but ad hoc training can be provided if the post holder has desire to train in endoscopy, or if the post holder has JAG accreditation or equivalent in upper/lower GI endoscopy service delivery in endoscopy can be negotiated. Similarly, participation in the GI bleed on call rota and weekend endoscopy service delivery can be negotiated.
